Job Title: Chef/Cook Assistant

Job Setting: Care Home / Nursing Home

Reporting to: Head Cook

Job Location: 41 Gainsborough Lane, Scawby, North Lincolnshirem DN20 9BY  (

Hours: 16 hours per week. Monday to Friday.

Salary: £7.50 (age related)

Job Purpose:  Work to the efficient and economic production of quality food with the allowed budget, whilst maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in line with EHO regulations.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications Required:  

  • Basic Food / Hygiene Certificate
  • Good community skills

  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Satisfactory Police Check and check against The POVA List (where applicable)

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications Required:  

  • Intermediate Food / Hygiene Certificate
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Experience of Food Preparation for the relevant Client group

Main Responsibilities:

Food Preparation:

  1. Prepare, cock and serve hot and cold meals, as and when required.
  2. Provide for special dietary requirements where necessary, and take into account the preferences of individual clients.
  3. Liaise with the Home Manager when planning / costing menus in order to provide a balance nutrition diet, making the best use of available fresh foods.
  4. Arrange / participate in Staff and Client meetings as required.

Budget / Financial Control:

  1. Maintain accurate records of food supplies, and freezer / fridge temperatures. 
  2. Ensure stock rotation. Order stocks and check deliveries, and check and value stocks as required by the Home Manager.
  3. Prepare Staff rota for Kitchen.
  4. Interview for new Staff Members with the Home Manager as when required, in line with the Company's Requirement policy.
  5. Supervise and instruct Kitchen Staff Members in the use of all equipment and hygiene procedure, giving help and guidance where appropriate.
  6. Conduct basic food hygiene training for all Care Staff involved in handling of food.
  7. Maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence. 
  8. Attend mandatory training day/courses, on or off site, as and when required.

Health & Safety:

  1. Ensure statutory Health and Safety standards in the kitchen and dining areas.
  2. Ensure all crockery and equipment is cleaned and stored appropriately, and the overall cleaning of the kitchen area (and, where appropriate, the dining areas) is carried out effectively.
  3. Report immediately to the Home Manager, or Person in Charge, any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a Client, colleague, and self or another.
  4. Understand, and ensure the implementation  of, the Care Centre's Health and Safety policy, and Emergency and Fire procedures.
  5. Report tot he Home Manager, or the Handyperson, any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment or any potential hazard.
  6. Promote safe working practice in the Care Centre.
  7. Promote a positive personal / professional profile withing the local community, ensuring the good reputation of the Care Centre at all times.
  8. Ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.
  9. Notify the Home Manager, or the Person in Charge, as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty, and also on your return to work from all periods of absence.
  10. Ensure the security of the Care Centre is maintained at all times.
  11. Adhere to all Company policy on procedure within the defined timescales.
  12. Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained.
  13. Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably assigned to you.
